A hard time for me

Monday morning, I sent off the bookmarks for the literacy class. I hope that they are well-received; 8 are crocheted, 8 are cardstock with tatted doodles decorating them, & 8 are fully tatted.

Monday afternoon, I got word that the person who taught me to tat had died. He had a heart attack. He was only 50 but he had suffered from bad health as long as I had known him.

I last saw him in person back in October, at the State Fair. I gave him a heart that I had made. He was so proud, because h… Continue

Finished my flag

It's done. I really wanted to tat the whole thing but I gave myself 2 weeks to design a pattern. I figured that if I could not do it in that time, then I would not have enough time to tat the whole thing. I used some size 10 crochet yarn/thread to design. Here's as far as I got.

Time to tat, but no energy

Last Tuesday evening, I got a scratchy throat. Next thing I knew, I've got bronchitis. I'm out of work for almost a week (it's a good thing I haven't been using my sick leave recently). I had all the time in the world to tat (except when coughing or sleeping) but no energy. *sigh* Alas, such a waste. Hopefully, I will stop coughing soon and will once again pick up my shuttles.

First flakes given away

Actually, the first two snowflakes went into the mail on the 10th; into Holidays for Heroes cards. I gave one to my assistant for Christmas, before he went home for the season. I also gave my director a snowflake; and I have 4 more set aside for my Mom's sisters & granddaddy's youngest sister-in-law (they are getting the Cebelia 30 ones). I have one more size 10 left; I think it will go to the my counterpart down the hall. It's blue & white so it's more seasonal than Christmas-y. Since s… Continue

I said something about snowflakes, didn't I? (picture heavy)

I've been tatting a few snowflakes. Oddly enough, for me, I've been using the same pattern over & over. I've just been varying thread and beads to make them individual. The pattern is the ribbon floss snowflake from Sunderman's Tatted Snowflakes book. None of them have been blocked yet or even had the end threads tended.

Thanks for the nice comments. I learned to tat many years ago but just recently picked it back up when I found my sister could use my tatting in her crazy quilting. I see there are a lot of new stitches I'm not familiar with. I will take your suggestion and check out intatters. I'm also new to the blogging world which I'm sure you noticed.

Thank you very much.

Thank you. I have ran from book store to craft store and am unable to find any different patterns. When they say it is a lost art they were not kidding.

Thank you! I am a bit overwhelmed at the moment but as soon as I have some 'down' time, I am going to try the basics in tatting.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I was excited to see that there were other needle tatters out there. I like to make bookmarks and doilies. I've done some edgings in the past but not many. I find that I give most of my work away. It seems that I can only finish something that I have planned as a gift. I once tatted a very small teacup with saucer and spoon that is sitting in my mom's shadow box. That was a fun way to pass a slow day at a garage sale. I'm not terribly experienced in tatting. I normally only tat during the winter months and since my kids have gotten older I don't tat as often as I'd like. I was taught to tat by a friend of mine. We sat down in her cabin one winter and tatted close to the fire while we chatted and drank tea. I really enjoyed that and miss it. My friend moved and we've lost touch. I am currently working on a doily. Its supposed to be a larger doily. I think about 15 inches across. I have been trying to think of a good home for it which is probably why its not done yet.

Thanks for the welcome! I've been crocheting since around 3 yrs old thanks to Grandmother. I've always wanted to learn to tat and found a helper at Hobby Lobby. I'm definitely hooked. I just finished my first real goodie for my daughter. Not too bad despite one extra picot GRIN!
