Lap hobby? Try pocket hobby. I can carry my basic supplies in an Altoid tin or two. One tin is to hold a couple shuttles (loaded) and another one to hold a thread cutter, picot gauge, and some fray-chek. If I want to wild & crazy, I add a third container to hold beads.

If I need something more, like extra threads, more beads, bead threader, jewelry tools, etc, then I can fit it all into a child's lunchbox. In fact, that's what I do carry.

Hi Jennifer, most people tat with thread, although yarn can be used for softer items like scarves and shawls. People who needle tat have said that the needle method works well for yarn. You'd need a yarn that was smooth, so the double stitches would be able to slide.
My picture 17 is my own HDT (hand dyed thread) "Rhubarb Pie". It's a 6 cord (cordonnet) crochet cotton. I offer my HDT in my Etsy shop, just click on the link on my page if you are curious to see what is there.

Hi Jennifer, welcome to tatting! You'll find all kinds of helpful support in learning to tat here. I do shuttle tatting, but there are lots of folks here that do needle tatting, and will be willing to help you if you get stuck.

Welcome to eTatters, Jen. Your site is very impressive (I can tell that I will be spending some time there).

I look forward to when you share photos of your work. You are going to share, aren't you? *big puppy eyes of pleading*
